Abstract: The article analyzes the US positioning and strategy toward China over the past decade, from former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump to President Joe Biden, corresponding to the presidency of Chinese President Xi Jinping from 2012 until now. The article points out that the US positioning toward China has remarkably changed, from considering China a “potential partner” under Barack Obama’s presidency to the “revisionist power” and “strategic competitor” under Donald Trump’s presidency, and now “the only competitor” under President Joe Biden. Such differentiated positioning reflected the difference in US strategy and handling of relations with China. This study was funded by the National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) under Project No. 506.01-2018.300.

Keywords: US-China relations, positioning; strategy; China; United States.
